TARRAS TWEED: The origin
Tarras Tweed was started by the talented Lynn Elliott, pictured, as a retirement project after a career in textiles, from making swatch books as a teenager to designing fine cloth for a variety of high end brands.
Our Founders Emma & Leanne, met Lynn in 2019 when they started Rose’s Wardrobe, a vintage inspired made to measure, made to order, clothing brand, and were sourcing local fabrics to make bespoke items out of for their customers.
Over the years lots of Lynn’s beautiful cloth has be made into a wide variety of garments and accessories. He sold his cloth, scarves and blankets at various fabric and fibre shows all over the country.
A lot of the cloth was woven on a lovingly restored Hattersley Peddle Loom Lynn rescued from a farm in Harris. Bought it back to his workshop, and slowly cleaned and bought the old machine back to life. Bigger jobs and blankets were woven at the last textile mill in Langholm, Drove Weavers.
After talking about retiring from this retirement project for several years, (every event was his final event!), Lynn handed over the brand and original peddle loom to Creation Mill CIC to continue the production of cloth, with the long term vision of training young people to use the Hattersley peddle Loom.
At the moment Lynn hasn’t fully retired (no shock there!) as he is still guiding Creation Mill about writing weaving tickets and developing some of his designs into new fresh ideas.
Creation Mill launched our take over by inviting the community to design a scarf inspired by the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve, the very landscape that initially inspired Lynn as he drive through it on the way to his ‘shed’ in Langholm.
Creation Mill is delighted to continue and develop Tarras Tweed - looking at exciting new products, ideas and collaborations to take the brand forward into Langholm’s future.
