Textiles Workshops past and future: What’s on at Creation Mill

We have been running community textiles workshops for four months now in skills from felting to rag rugging. Read on for a recap of what we have achieved so far and to see what’s coming up next.

Building Sewing Skills

We kickstarted our calendar of workshops with a course of beginner’s sewing sessions at the Eskdalemuir hub and an after school sewing and dressmaking club for children and teenagers. The feedback has been great, with students excited to continue to develop their sewing skills.

Our after school ‘Sew’ical club is still ongoing and we will be continuing children’s workshops into the summer holidays - find out more and book a space for your young person here.

Introducing New Textile Techniques

We have been lucky enough to bring an array of talented craftspeople to Langholm to pass on their knowledge to our community. Ann Smith kickstarted these with her sell-out felting workshops. It was incredible to see the pieces being produced by attendees, such talent!

In May, weaving legend Jan Beadle hosted an introductory class, showing beginners how create beautiful fabrics using table looms. The results were amazing, and we can’t wait to welcome Jan back to Creation Mill in September for her next session.

We also offered classes in Geli Print, rag rugging and patchwork cushion making, giving the Langholm community the opportunity to learn new crafts, socialise and get creative!

Weekend Workshop Retreat with Tarras Valley and Stitch Narrative

We are very excited to be running a weekend-long retreat with Tarras Valley Nature Reserve and Karen Auld from Stitch Narrative this August. The event will combine nature and textiles, giving attendees the chance to explore the Tarras Moors, taking inspiration from their flora and fauna. Back in Langholm, Karen will guide you in creating an Appliqué wall hanging with embroidered surface, incorporating Langholm woven textile to add site specific detail.

This incredible retreat will run from the 27th-28th of August, with the option to stay and dine at the picturesque Eskdale Hotel. You can book your place here, or learn more about the Tarras Valley Nature Reserve.

The six-hour course will cover:

  • Learning to use a 4 shaft Loom

  • Experimenting with colour and texture through weaving

  • Understanding basic 4 shaft patterns

  • Learn finishing techniques

With a delicious lunch included in the price.
