Creation Mill is #ShareRepairAware

This week we will be joining Circular Communities Scotland in celebrating #ShareRepairAware week.

Sharing and repairing the resources we have allows us to live more sustainably, save money, consume less and learn new skills - what's not to love!

A Sharing Project is a project that hosts a library of resources for community members to borrow instead of buying new.

Here at our Creation Mill studio space you will find a growing library of books covering all sorts of crafty topics from fashion design to an A-Z of crochet stitches. We also have a large collection of second hand patterns and magazines that are available to buy.
In our Scrap Store you can find a huge range of good quality textiles and craft materials that would have otherwise gone to waste. We have a bank of equipment and machines that are available to use as part of our regular workshops and groups or when our studio is open to the public.

Perhaps the most valuable resource we have available to share is our human resource! Our volunteers and participants have a wealth of knowledge and experience across a range of textile based skills and they are always happy to share their expertise. We host a regular “In Stitches” group where participants can find a friendly space to chat and share advice about their current projects.

Creation Mill works closely with Schools and Youth Organisations to promote the sharing of traditional skills and the employment opportunities that still exist within the textiles industry in Langholm and the surrounding towns. As part of this learning we use materials from our Scrap Store, demonstrating the value of reusing and recycling textiles that would have otherwise ended up in landfill. Many of the materials we have are offcuts and excess from factories that manufacture goods for luxury fashion brands such as Chanel! These materials have plenty of life left in them!

A Repair project is a project which provides a community space where people can bring damaged items to be repaired by skilled volunteers.

At Creation Mill our experts offer sewing machine servicing. If you have a machine at home that could do with a bit of a spruce up, dust it off and bring it down to us at our creative space.

You can find lots of information about how local communities are finding alternatives to overconsumption and building more circular economies at the Share and Repair Network - Here

You can find a useful map of other local organisations who are busy repairing and sharing Here on the Circular Communities Scotland website.
