Slow Stitching and Serenity

Over the last few weeks we have been lucky enough to host Pat Douglas from Carlenrig Farm who has been delivering some incredibly well received Boro stitching workshops.

Boro stitching originates from Japan and refers to the art of reworking and repairing textiles that would have otherwise gone to waste, it's all very Creation Mill!

This method of repair fits with our waste less ideals and allows participants to have a good rummage around the scrap store and use these scraps with stunning results.

Not only does this lovely past time make use of odds and ends in a fantastically eco friendly and sustainable way, it is the perfect craft for achieving a positive sense of wellbeing, win win really.

The nice thing about Boro stitching is the lack of a pattern or desired end product. This means that the crafter is free to express their creativity without any pressure.

Many of the slow stitching techniques are very repetitive allowing you to work with your muscle memory and craft mindlessly which is great for giving your brain a rest from all the noise.

Of course this is not the only technique that allows you to work on your wellbeing through creative activity. The sense of achievement that comes with making something from scratch and the connection that can be found by crafting with others is great for helping us to feel well and stay well.

Discovering a new craft can be expensive and at Creation Mill we want to make sure that creative wellbeing is accessible to all. Many of our groups and workshops are subsidised by our generous funders meaning that we are able to offer them at a low cost or often for free! We also have our well stocked scrap store which enables people to buy good quality craft materials for a low price all whilst supporting a more circular economy.

Our slow stitching workshops sold out pretty fast! But we have plenty more crafty offerings at Creation Mill over the next few months - see our upcoming workshops HERE

You can visit Pats website HERE, she has some beautiful things available.

There are also lots of resources online that are easily accessible and free if you want to find out more about slow stitching and its techniques.
